Playwright Maryat Lee, a Kentucky native, trained under theologian Paul Tillich and anthropologist Margaret Mead before making a name for herself with street theater in 1950s East Harlem, using non-actors and the most primitive of stages to mirror the real lives and concerns of the community. Her first play Dope! focused on the heroin epidemic ravaging the city, and was championed by Jackie Robinson among many other notables. Lee's other plays addressed then-taboo themes of gay urban life, domestic abuse, and failing schools, all presented on crowded city streets by performers on a tiny stage just a few feet from the audience. It was a thrilling and exhausting experience for the young Lee. She produced off-Broadway shows, traveled around the world, and struck up a deep friendship with short story master Flannery O'Connor before resurrecting her street theater troupe in the swirling New York City of the 1960s. In 1975, ground down by city life, Lee moved to rural West Virginia and began using the same "rough theater" methods that worked in the inner city, crafting plays from local legends and oral histories.
Drawing on Lee's archives and much other previously unpublished material, this volume collects four plays from that era, with extensive notes by the author and Dr. William French on the plays and Maryat's process.
